Father Of Indian Statistics

  • Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (1893-1972)  was born in Calcutta on 29 June 1983, which is now celebrated as the National Statistics Day of India.
  • He is the founder of Indian Statistical Institute, organizer of Indian Statistical Systems, pioneer in the application of Statistical Techniques to practical problems, architect of the Indian second Five Year Plan and much more.
  • His most notable achievement is Mahalanobis Distance, a revolutionary statistical measure used for data classification and pattern recognition.
  • He formulated the concept at King's College, Cambridge, which continues to be a cornerstone of various statistical analyses.
  • His research also helped to establish a crucial baseline on anthropometric data for Indian population.
